Leading Ladies Marathon and my arch nemesis, downhill running. Déjà vu of Western States 100. Fitness is good, but we could only fit so much race specificity in 2-3 weeks time. End result, quads were already getting hammered a few miles in and my slowest road marathon.

You can’t beat the views in the canyon though! @leadingladies_dakotaspirit had the mile markers spot on and great aid station support.

I was planning to run a marathon earlier this year but an abnormally hot and dry winter (and spring & summer) meant a bad allergy/asthma flare so I pivoted to run Catherine’s Fatass 50k instead when I was back home for my grandfather’s celebration of life. Well, that got postponed due to wildfire smoke from Canada and I couldn’t move my travel again.

So, last minute decision to pivot a 3rd time and jump into Leading Ladies. Maybe not third time’s the charm, but I got a race in!

Thank you to @itgoesinflag and @jessmillerfit for run and strength training, and special shoutout to Ian for crewing and the 3:30am wake up to make the 6am start line.

Thank you to @nelsonchiropracticpc and @westriveracupuncture for all the bodywork!

With race day getting closer, one of the best things you can do on your climbs is pay attention to what actually moves you well.

Try this on an uphill effort: run for a minute, then hike for a minute. Notice your pace, but more importantly, notice your effort.

Sometimes you may be “running” so slowly that your effort is an 8 or 9 out of 10, while a strong hike brings that effort down to a 5 or 6 at almost the same speed.

On Pikes Peak, hiking is not giving up. It is part of racing smart. The goal is to find the pace you can keep coming back to, that slow jog or strong hike where you think, “I can hold this.”

Practice it now, so on race day you know when to run, when to hike, and how to keep moving without burning through everything too early.

Big thanks to our partner @sundogrunning for helping runners train smarter for the mountain.

Kissing the iconic rock. Congratulations to @tobia Kissing the iconic rock. Congratulations to @tobiascsorensen on his @hardrock100run finish in 45:38:55!

It’s been a long lottery process with lots of hard racing in between, including but not limited to, TOR330 and Swiss360.

We’re super happy for you, Tobias!
