Oof! Never is it easy. Fought my own demons in the heat and humidity, but finished another local #southdakota #ultrarunning favorite. First place #grandmaster trophy to boot! And she’s back on the trails! After a fast Boston Marathon, Amy is back on the trails, taking 3rd place at the storied Laurel Highlands 70.5 Mile.

Amy also finished 20th overall in a field of 184 starters!

Bighorn 52 miler

I almost didn’t race this one. Two days prior, I was convinced I had giardia from the thru-hike. I was super sick for an entire day. But things subsided, and I thought, let’s try it out!

So happy I did! I crushed my idea of how this race was gonna go. It was really meant to be a good training effort for Bigfoot, but I once we left Jaws (the start), I couldn’t help but race it.

So many bad things happened, but I powered through. Took a bad fall right onto my bad knee about mile 8 or so, which caused it to swell immediately. But I kept racing. Then I realized that after getting the shoes wet and muddy (this course is known for it’s mud), they became way too big for my feet and my orthotics would scrunch forward to the toe box everytime we went down hill... and this is a net downhill race, about 11, 765 feet of decent! But I kept racing! Then my stomach started to act up, but I kept racing!

The last 5 miles was a long, flat gravel road, and I powered through those miles at a 9-minute pace on quads that barely worked to finish 6th woman and 14th overall in a time of 10:42:31. I can’t wait to try to beat this time next year!

My favorite part of this weekend, though, was cheering on my athlete and friend Steph and friend Tom, friends Amanda and Kenzie, and my long-time childhood friend Jake who came all the way from Missouri to race the 100 miler and killed it! I got to spend quality time with my childhood bestie Megan and their girls. What a great and fulfilling experience!

A year ago, I marched into my bathroom after DNFing the 2024 San Diego 100 miler and taped a bright green notecard to my mirror. It read: “I WILL FINISH THE SAN DIEGO 100.” I looked at it every. single. day. When we moved to a new house in December, the card moved too and it occupied a prominent spot on my dresser. I looked at it every. single. day.

Now…I can put the card away and close that chapter.

I fought the good fight. I finished the race.

But the card will always be a reminder that goals delayed are not goals lost, if you’re willing to keep fighting and working and growing. That often there is more value in the struggle than in success. That failure is perhaps a necessary catalyst for true and lasting forward motion.

I’m still very much processing my day, and there will be more thoughts to come. But for now, my hope for you is that you keep working towards the things that are near and dear to you, the ones that no one else may understand. Even in setback, and struggle, and darkness, and even when success takes longer than you expected.

Because they are worth it. And so are you.
