Happy #medalmonday!

Had the chance to hop over to the Orange Park neighborhood on Saturday for the Run to the Sun 5k. The title was not deceptive — it felt like we were running directly into the sun. Ahhhh Florida.

The deets:

Also got super close to two of the neighborhood guineafowls (see photo)

Anyway, not much to report other than this race went so much better than the 5k I “raced” two weeks ago. (Like 40 seconds better. I hate evening races.)

All 3.1 miles felt smooth, probably due to me not sprinting off the gun like I normally do. I just kept it easy, tried not to pass anyone in the first mile, and concentrated on keeping my effort level just below the red line of the pain cave.

After running three JAX races since we’ve moved here, I can confidently say that the running scene here is super well-organized and much larger and more involved than expected. Plus, most of the races use an app that automatically send results AND free photos seconds after you finish. As someone who doesn’t have a personal photographer that follows me around while I run (*side eyes most runfluencers*) I appreciate this extra touch.

Anyway, enjoy a double dose of photos from my last two races.

Next up: the Famous Idaho Potato 10k on May 18. (Not kidding.)

100 miler #7: Better Than Revenge.

I went into Umstead 100 planning to use this as a training run for Western States. I told my coach (hi @ericsenseman 👋🏻) that while a PR would be nice, it would mean less than a strong finish. I did not want to blow up early and walk the second half of the race, even if that got me a new PR. Confidence for June was the goal, not any specific number.

The first 62 were great. I made some new friends, cheered on and got cheered for by so many familiar faces, and executed the race plan perfectly. Sometime in the late 60s my legs started hurting and my shuffle created some blisters. While treating them back at the car at mile 75, I got way too cold. We heated me up - but maybe too much, as I immediately just fell asleep hunched over. My body said “oh we’re back in the womb? Cool, night night.” My amazing friends helped me change from a warm snuggly embryo back to a fully grown adult, and it was back on the trail.

My final pacer Katie told me a fantastic story about how she was going to meet her father after the race so he could fly them in his Cessna up to PA to see the eclipse tomorrow. I immediately took off running and yelling “Katie there’s nothing I hate more than tardiness, we gotta go!” I have never laughed so hard at 4am and I would like to apologize to the lovely wildlife for disrupting their slumber. The first goal we set when leaving at mile 87 was sub 27 hours. Then it became sub 26:30. Then we realized that we were moving so well sub 26 was a given. And that’s how I finished in 25:39:41. 11th female. #1 in entertaining aid station volunteers with my shenanigans. If you can’t be fast be funny. And if you’re going to have a meltdown, fix it, set some new goals, and learn for next time.

Legs are heavy, feet are trashed, but my heart is full. Thank you to everyone for believing in me or shaking your head in disbelief at me. I will accept both forms of support.

Oh and most importantly, Katie made her flight.

I can’t tell you how much of a pleasure it was to see Becky get that buckle. To witness the amount of grit and tenacity she displayed to cross that finish line impressive. I was glad to be a part of the journey.

I have a big way too long race recap coming, but I felt like this needed it’s own post.

Ron Hammett is the best person. Ever. Here is a story from Umstead that shows the kind of friend and coach that he is.

It’s mile 90 and we are out on the last loop. I have spent the last god knows how long walking and crying/whimpering because of how intense my foot pain was. I was wearing my backup road shoes all day due to an unfortunate encounter with a piece of furniture 5 minutes before bed the night before. My feet were complete hamburger meat after walking on rocks in road shoes all day and every step was literally the worst thing ever.

Ron literally took the foam liner out of his shoes and cut them down for me to use to add a layer between my feet and the rocks. That’s the kind of guy he is.

I owe him a lot for this one, y’all. Ron you are the freaking GOAT. @feet2feat @sundogrunning

Silver medal finish at the Santa Teresa King Richard Half Marathon! Super proud to pull this one out. Was sick all week but got outta bed to run. Then on mile four scalped my head crossing under a downed tree. Didn’t realize how bad it was until I saw it wasn’t just sweat on my face (RIP my hat). Had to let the worry go and save it for after the finish. Came in about 30 minutes faster than I expected and EMT said no stitches. Double win! Biggest thanks goes to my wife who took care of me all this week and then was there to cheer me on too @stephsyun. Next race is the 100 miler in three weeks. @sundogrunning #letsgo
